kcwc spring 2011: day one

May 9th, 2011

Yee! Haw! Today is the first day of the Kids Clothes Week Challenge! Last year, I had my own little kcwc a week early so I could have a finished garment to show you each day, but I’m playing it fast and loose with the rest of you this time around. The only thing I’ve done is pick out the fabric I want to use for each kid. Sorry for the crummy photos, I snapped them quickly before I headed out to the fabric store to stock up on elastic. Then what do you know? There was a bunch of awesome fabric there, which is in the dryer as we speak. So my hour today might be all ironing. How about you, did you get all the pattern tracing and fabric cutting out of the way before today or are you going in cold like me? Anyway you do it is fine as long as you find that hour to do it!

We are 400+ strong this spring! So the flickr group is already blowing up. And I’ve got tutorials and inspiration over on my pinterest page if you get stuck. Ready? Set. Go!

Totally going in cold. I am just going to use the fabric I have, and wing it! I made shorts for my son this morning out of an old t-shirt and am planning on making some dresses for my daughter. I’m so excited! This is fun!

Well, I have a basketful of clothes all cut out ready to go. I just have to sit down tonight and sew up hopefully at least one outfit. We’ll see. I must say I am super excited :)

I thought I’d get everything cut out and save just the sewing for this week – but it’s quite hard not to start sewing once all those yummy pieces are laid out before you.
    So much for the plan.
One pair of pants done today – tonight I just wanted to cut out the pieces for tomorrow’s project, but it was just too tempting!
I’ll still have to sew in a zip tomorrow, but first I have to learn how to shorten it!?! Something to look forward to! Happy sewing, everyone!

  5. Becky M says:

I only did my washing and ironing in advance. But I did manage to finish a top today! uploading photos and blogging tonight!

Last year I was more prepped for my week of sewing. I had fabric and patterns all planned out with some room for creativity as I went. This week falls in the middle of a VERY busy month for me so 1 hour a day is really going to be a challenge.

  7. Wendy says:

spent some qt getting organized today and hopefully I will spend at least an hour on one of the many pieces that I hope to finish this week….the list is always so long, don’t know if I’ll finish it all but if nothing else, it’s a start.

got some skirts cut… crossing my fingers that the headache goes away so i can sew…. would be nice to add more projects to my list and get them completed this week so i can relax for the summer :)

You are a machine. I will watch from afar and admire. I’m actually having a total grown-up week, no kiddo, just me the grown-up doing grown-up work and play. So I’m watching and admiring and wishing all 350+ well! Keeping my eyes on those plaids in particular….

So excited! I have big plans for this week. I got all my kids a couple pairs of pj pants done today. Simple but very needed. Cutting things out to be ready for tomorrow.

First hour. Done. Glad to be joining in this year. Looking forward to seeing all the creativity out there.

i made a little baby skirt for my 3 month old! very excited that i completed something in my allowed hour of sewing ; ) woo hoo! so excited to see everyone’s creations.

  13. Katie says:

Completely cold. In fact, it’s 7:48pm, and I haven’t even started my hour yet. But the kids are almost to bed and then I have some free time! This week will be mostly simple projects with stuff I have on hand. :0)

  14. Celina says:

Ouf!!! I just finished ironing my fabrics and posted about thes challenge on my blog… Thank you for the initiative! I hope I make it all week…

  15. I wasn’t organised enough to pre-cut fabric (or trace and cut patterns for that matter). First pattern (PJ pants) traced cut and sewn on Day 1. I wanted a quick win! Will try to have a cutting spree tomorrow (although the second pair of PJ pants might be more fun). Thanks for the motivation.

  16. My fabric is washed & dried & waiting to be ironed. My goal was to have it all cut out today but a 3 hour nap over took me. :-/ Since I’m still really new to sewing I’m hoping to at least get one pair of pants done this week. :-)

  17. Totally forgot about this but I sew almost every night anyway. So teachers gifts with have to be bought:-) and more kids clothes will have to be made. Love It.

I did play around with some ideas and patterns, but haven’t cut any fabric. Will have to do that this week. But if I do manage to start sewing in the evening, I normally can’t stop after an hour. There’ll be little sleep this week.

  20. ChristineG says:

This is very exciting. I know I will get loads done!

  21. Angi says:

I’m totally flying by the seat of my pants this week. Not the best way to do things, but it is what it is!

  22. Tiphaine says:

running behind but catching up !!!!!

  23. sabrina says:

I’m going in mostly cold. I have a few loose ideas in my head, but I certainly did not pick out patterns or fabric or cut anything out yet! I *did* sew on Mother’s Day & I’m holding it in my back pocket in case I have a day this week where this sewing thing doesn’t work out so well… I’ll add my photo to the flickr group, but here’s my blog post about it: http://seanandsabrinastwinsandwich.blogspot.com/2011/05/ccsc-monday.html
Thanks for letting me be a part of this!

  24. Chris says:

I made one top on Monday…total time, 2.5 hours or one nap. :)

  25. Marishannon says:

I feel so intimidated around all the awesome sewers here but I am still participating! I will admit that most of day one was spent organizing my fabric…that counts right? ;)
