kcwc spring 2011: day one

May 9th, 2011

Yee! Haw! Today is the first day of the Kids Clothes Week Challenge! Last year, I had my own little kcwc a week early so I could have a finished garment to show you each day, but I’m playing it fast and loose with the rest of you this time around. The only thing I’ve done is pick out the fabric I want to use for each kid. Sorry for the crummy photos, I snapped them quickly before I headed out to the fabric store to stock up on elastic. Then what do you know? There was a bunch of awesome fabric there, which is in the dryer as we speak. So my hour today might be all ironing. How about you, did you get all the pattern tracing and fabric cutting out of the way before today or are you going in cold like me? Anyway you do it is fine as long as you find that hour to do it!

We are 400+ strong this spring! So the flickr group is already blowing up. And I’ve got tutorials and inspiration over on my pinterest page if you get stuck. Ready? Set. Go!

  1. with excitement! My plan is trace and cut during lunch or naps. Sew at night. How much gets done that’s up to my moody machine.

    Totally going in cold.
    Thanks for hosting this again!

  3. Where do I join?

    I have a few things planned this week… :)

I’d planned to have everything cut out & ready to sew, but alas I fell into my usual habit of leaving everything to the last possible second! But I did make a pair of leggings today – better than nothing!

  5. heather says:

going in cold, plan to cut this afternoon and start sewing this evening. Wish I could just sew all day today!!

  6. Doris says:

I signed up just yesterday and I already have fabric washed. Can’t wait to make new little outfits for my grandbaby in VA.

  7. Suzanne says:

Today it’s all about cutting out…blessing dresses for 2 new granddaughters, plus other clothing projects this week. Good luck and happy sewing to everyone!

  8. Annika says:

I did some pattern cutting and cut out some fabric a few weeks ago. I was all set to have my own KCWC when you posted about this one, so I set everything aside. Today will be all about finding it!

  9. erin says:

going in cold turkey. i haven’t even picked out the fabric! BUT i’m excited!!!

  10. Liz says:

I have a few things cut out and ready to go tonight! I’m looking forward to a productive week.

I have a pattern for an Alaska kuspuk that I’ve been wanting to do. It’s for my youngest daughter and it is worn like a little top with skirt. It has a pocket in front and hood. Here’s an example of one that I purchased when I went to Alaska many years ago: http://www.flickr.com/photos/picturesbyann/2453583405/ . Also am going to the store today to look at patterns for skirts for my older daughter and some fabric. The fabric I have on hand isn’t big enough to make a skirt.

I’m a late joiner, but I’m in! And going in cold! I did, however, manage to shovel out my sewing room today (frankly I think that should TOTALLY count towards the hour… or two… or three… LOL!) and cut out an Emmy top for my youngest! So Wahoo!

  13. felicia says:

Totally going in cold! Yikes! Hope I do better this time around :)

  14. So exciting! I currently have a stack of fabric remarkably similar to yours, but I did manage to find the time to trace two patterns yesterday so I’m a teeny weeny fraction ahead of the game. My Oliver + S sailboat pattern arrived today, so I’m hoping to get that traced tonight, then I can start cutting and sewing.

  15. oh, great choices–can’t wait to see what you come up with! I’m in, by the way, though I thought houseguests in the sewing room were going to interfere so I missed the official signup–but they are gone and I am off to reclaim the space and fulfill some kid sewing requests!

  16. Carla says:

I started my most complicated bit early, but the rest of my planned projects look like yours right now. It’s all very exciting!

  17. I used my time today to look for notions and trims and perfect pieces to re-purpose…
Also have fabric and such in the wash…
A bit slower this year but feel happy to take my time.

Totally going in cold! And frantically trying to finish a quilt before diving into the kid’s clothes. But Ideas! I have ideas in my head. Easy stuff, but cute! Can’t wait :) Well, actually, I can. Quilt binding is calling me…

  19. Ang says:

I actually managed to get some things cut out ahead of time! Though I do need to make a trip to the store for a couple of things as well.

  20. Kimberly says:

I was able to cut two pattern pieces out last week but other than that – going in cold. I will be beyond stoked if I get a pair of pants made by the end of this week. Can’t wait to see what you whip up – those fabric selections are super interesting.

  21. EricaG says:

This is my first year! My goals are small, but I’m excited to participate.

  22. Amanda says:

Cutting and pinning! My little guy doesn’t like napping today..so we’ll see if any actual sewing gets done.

  23. Mary says:

I had it all planned out and then on Saturday my mum was admitted to hospital and has had her appendix taken out today. So I’m feeling a bit shattered! However my therapy whilst waiting for visiting time was spent cutting and sewing so I’ve already managed over an hour today – yay!

  24. Cindy says:

I traced over the weekend and spent last night/this morning cutting the fabric. I was able to sew a little more than I thought I would since my 2 youngest stayed home today and I didn’t have my day broke up with school runs. I’m sure I won’t get as much done tomorrow but that’s okay!

  25. Lisa says:

I had a plan for a red riding hood cape – BUT then had to wash the wool fabric so managed to wash cut and make a pair of knot shorts – all on day one and posted a picture on my blog. A good start I think but will probably just be cutting out on day 2.
