about

me

Hello! Thank you so much for stopping by Elsie Marley. My name is Meg Spaeth and I am the author of this little blog. I am the mother to three lovely little children and married to a wonderful husband who also happens to be my best friend. I grew up in Minnesota, jumped around from place to place for a bit and now our family is settled in the fabulous city of Madison, WI.

I love to cook and before I had children I worked in many professional kitchens. Way back when I was a teenager, I worked as a line cook. Then starting in college I worked very late nights in bakeries, baking bread and french pastries. After college I went to pastry school and was quite taken with making chocolates and confectioneries. Up until I had my daughter, I worked as a chocolatier in Chicago.

I started to sew because my outlet for creativity--making delicate chocolates and elaborate desserts--was no longer possible with a little baby in tow. The first thing I made was a quilt, which, by the way, is a horrible first sewing project, but I learned about my machine and it got me excited to sew more. Since then I've learned to make clothes, plush toys, (better) quilts, and recently took up crocheting. All along the way, this wonderful and supportive craft blog community has helped me learn to make and inspired me to keep making.

The name of my blog comes from a nursery rhyme about a bar maid:

Elsie Marley’s grown so fine,
She won’t get up to feed the swine,
But lies in bed ’til eight or nine!
Lazy Elsie Marley.
