kcwc: day five

September 24th, 2010

I cut out this skirt for kcwc in the spring, but then the pockets and the piping started to looking very difficult and it found it’s way to the bottom of the pile. Well, it turns out the piping wasn’t hard at all–a little fiddly maybe, but it turned out.

The pockets on the other hand are now in the garbage. You can’t see the back pockets the pattern picture, but they are cute little curved things with piping around the bottom, and a horizontal buttonhole on the top hem, oh and they are top stitched too. I have no idea how you are supposed to make buttonholes look good on knit fabric or top stitching for that matter. Whatever, maybe I’ll have to courage to try again in the spring.

Or if my daughter demands it, because she’s pretty peeved that the pockets in the front are fake. And really I was kind of annoyed too, when I figured out what the diagrams were telling me to do. This is another pattern from Everyday Bottoms; it seems like I’m having a japanese kids clothes week, but the patterns are so damn stylish I can’t not make them.

Today’s giveaway is a new book, called Sew Tina!, by fabric and pattern designer Tina Givens. The book doesn’t even hit the shelves until October, so this is a super special sneak peek! It is filled ideas and patterns for children’s clothes, accessories and things for their rooms. I haven’t seen the book yet, but if that cute little dress is any indication, it is sure to be fantastic.

To enter this giveaway tell us if you are a work from patterns or dive right in without a plan kinda sewer, or if you have read some extra good craft books lately or what you had for breakfast. Good Luck!

The winner is

#114: Carolyn!

Congratulations!

I kinda wing it most of the time. I cannot get patterns where I live and don’t own a printer to print off online ones so I just make my own or wing it!

  2. Becky says:

I’m a work from the pattern the first time kind of gal. But once, I’ve made the first one it’s a no holds barred free-for-all:)

  3. Jessica says:

Very cute! I just made some dresses for my daughter. Check it out.

  4. Sonia says:

I’m just picking up sewing again after a four year hiatus so I’m sticking to patterns for now, but working my way back into winging it with hopefully making some easy leggings tonight.

  5. Beth D. says:

I combine both patterns and just-going-for-it. I like to start with a base, like a pattern, but then improvise my own style into it!

  6. Lisa says:

I am definitely a pattern girl, but I have gotten far enough along now that I am getting some of the basics and have managed to put my own twist here and there now. But – patterns that remind me of a favorite dress from the store always rock my world.

  7. Sarah says:

I do a little of both…it just depends on the project. I prefer to do clothing with a pattern, but will sometimes adapt or adjust it as I feel like it. :)

  8. darci says:

i’m a technical designer by trade- so i generally have to have a well thought out plan or pattern to follow. I want things to turn out perfect

  9. Vivian says:

I think about a design and then I’m a chicken and it takes a few days/weeks before I decide to just do it.

    Oatmeal.

  10. Paige says:

{sigh} I do both, but things go much smoother with a pattern. I had to set aside one of my projects this week because I was just winging it and made it too small & have to order more fabric. bah.
Even with patterns I usually make SOME change, but at least the basics turn out right : )

  11. Christina says:

I can totally wing it but it usually stresses me out, before during and after the sewing. Then again, I get irritated if a pattern is too controlling and exacting about the process. Japanese pattern books are my happy medium — I find they give me just enough info to keep me calm but not so much hand holding that I feel impatient.

  12. I love looking at books and patterns, but when it comes right down to it, I almost always just wing it.

Thanks for the giveaway. Fingers crossed…

  13. diana says:

    pattern – YES

  14. Sarah says:

Winging it freaks me out a little but I am huge fan of tutorials that let me do my own thing but offer a little guidance!

  15. April says:

Scrambled eggs and sausage for breakfast…

Definitely a pattern girl! My pattern obsession is worse than my fabric obsession, lol!

  16. Laura says:

I’m definitely a pattern girl- at the very least I have to have a plan!

  17. Tara says:

I try to have a plan but rarely use a pattern unless it’s a simple shape that I’ve kept that I know works!!

  18. Jessie says:

I’ve never used a pattern, but my projects tend to come out somewhat mediocre, so I have a feeling this book might help… Thanks for the opportunity. :)

  19. Jennifer R. says:

Patterns. Patterns. Patterns. Winging it on a sewing machine is like winging it in the kitchen…usually a frustrating disaster for me. I’ll probably never change.

  20. Nydia says:

I have been working my butt off on this dress, and I am almost done. Unfortunately Flickr is blocked here in the United Arab Emirates so I have not been able to post progress pictures. Would it be annoying to any of you if on the last day I just put a link to my blog to show the complete project form start to finish?

  21. darlene says:

i’m a pattern gal, but, once i get the pattern in my hot little hands, it will never look like the pic on the envelope/e-book/etc … i will work it over to fix it the way i want it … i guess i’m that kind o gal: i like it the way i like it … LOL … working on my first quilt — a baby quilt for a new grandson; polar tech jackets for said boy’s sibs, and, then, well, chirstmas dresses for dgds …. not too much …. oh, yea, canning tomatoes, peaches … i guess it is way tooo much going on …. LOL ….

  22. Karin says:

I’ve been diving in lately because I’m afraid of patterns.

  23. Tiffany G. says:

Not a pattern kinda girl, but I would save myself a lot of frustration and money if I was.

P.S. I had french toast sticks with strawberry syrup this morn:)

  24. MJ says:

I have to have a pattern!!! The only non-pattern I have attempted was for a pillowcase, I figured 2 rectangles can’t be too bad!

And I just received the book “Sewing Clothes Kids Love” and it is awesome!! I’ve been sewing for a few recent years, but I learned from watching my mom growing up and didn’t remember a lot of the basics, and i’ve enjoyed learning tips and shortcuts!

We had cranberry-orange muffins & plums for breakfast :)

  25. Diana Hood says:

I’m a new sewist so I don’t have alot of skills yet, I am generally a dive right in kind of person but lately I’ve been trying to use patterns so I can learn new things.
