The Happy Homemade Hoodie sew-along is next week! You got the book, but now you need the fabric! What are you going to make you hoodie out of? This hoodie pattern works with a so many different fabrics. My favorite for summertime is linen; chambray runs a close second. After a hot day at the beach nothing feels better on your skin than linen. The Robert Kaufman yard dyed essex linen is everyone’s favorite and it is perfect for this hoodie pattern.

There are a few good prints in linen and chambray, but the best prints are on canvas. The canvas prints pictured above are either 100% cotton cotton/linen blends. Even though canvas sounds like it would be a heavy fabric it is a little lighter than linen, but still has a good weight to it. I just got the Nani Iro pictured here and it washes up beautifully. It would make a very cheery hoodie!

I’m calling this group of fabrics wovens, which sounds a little vague, but what I mean is a fabric with a looser weave and softer drape than canvas or linen. Ikat is a woven and one that people don’t use often for kids clothes (I did!). It is soft and durable, two things necessary if your kid is going to wear what you make. :) Shot cotton falls into this category too and it is absolutely beautiful. Two different colors are woven together to create this fabric and it make a color with an incredible amount of depth. The third kind of woven I have pictured is homespun. I’m not sure if Homespun is an actual kind of fabric, but there is section of homespun fabric at Joann’s that work really well with this pattern.

I inadvertently went from the heaviest fabric to the lightest! On a blazing hot day, your kids need to wear something that will project their skin from the sun, but not make them any hotter than they already are. Voile and shirting fabrics are so light and cool they do just that. And they come in great prints! The stripes are especially good!
This is only the smallest sampling of what you could use to make the Happy Homemade Hoodie. I know you are going to ask, so I’ll answer now: Yes, you could use a knit fabric, but I think the best thing about this pattern is that it is made for woven fabrics, which means you can have all kinds of fun with prints! And even though I almost never use quilting cottons for clothes, I think they would work here–especially for summer. You could even use terry cloth for a swimsuit coverup. My children tend to turn bright blue when they get out of the water and would love something cozy to put on during pool break! If you are sewing for cooler weather flannel is a great option or even fleece.
This pattern could go in so many different directions. Did I just give you some good ideas or overwhelm you with options? Maybe you already have some great fabric picked out. What is it?!

I’ve already made this one up in chambray a while back. This time I’ve pulled an interlock knit. But you’re tempting me with the idea of a homespun…
I was going to say in the post, if you are going to use a knit, interlock would really be the best. Ooo, or french terry. That my new favorite. ;) But yeah, homespuns would be great for summer! So many choices!!
