There really is no good reason to make this pie, but when I saw it on Gourmet's website a few weeks ago I really wanted to find a reason. Now that Gourmet is gone it seems some ridiculous pie making might be in order. Because along with the magazine and the website (though I assume epicurious.com will continue) all the web only recipes will disappear--mr. fatty fatty bacon pie being one of them.  My favorite part of this recipe--after the fact that practically every other ingredient is fat--is the little parenthetical after 1 cup peanut butter (not natural). It was obviously very late in the evening when someone decided to throw together a jar of Jif, some chocolate wafers and bacon dipped in sugar. Eating this pie seems like a good way to say goodbye and screw you! how the hell did you %!*&  everything up enough to make this great magazine get axed.

I'm guessing Gourmet got axed because Mr. Fatty Fatty CEO wouldn't be satisifed with a smaller slice of his money pie.

Is it good pie? And why is bacon turning up in every dessert lately? I've seen bacon ice cream, bacon candy, bacon pancakes (okay - not technically dessert, but come on...). What is going on?

I think Caroline has it right. I don't think the people who make Gourmet did anything wrong... someone higher up wanted those resources to do something else. Having a slump in advertisers was enough to pull the plug? I mean really, a nearly 70 year old magazine, and a 6 month slump is enough to pull the plug? Cooking Karma is going to kick some muckety muck in the butt one of these days.

I'd love to see your version of that pie. It sounds crazy. Plain crazy. I might have to make it one day :-)

Yes--how was the pie? Please give a review.

This strange, morbid curiosity keeps pulling me back to this post to see if anyone's actually made it...

We have a great little restaurant near us that just opened, and serves an appetizer called "Three Strips of Bacon in a Glass." And that's what it is. Served with a side of peanut butter to dip it in. Sounded so silly, but I thought it'd be gross. It freakin' rocks, yo. Love the look of this pie--like all that bacon, plus pie. Yummmm.
