handmade bunny lovey // elsie marley

You know how yesterday I made a baby outfit inspired by this page from I Can Fly? Well, after staring at that page for so long, I had to make a bunny too!

I Can Fly! // elsie marley

I know it’s kid’s clothes week and I should be making clothes, but I couldn’t help myself. I’ve been itching to make some soft toys recently (I’ve got more cut out!). Inspired by these handmade toys, I made my own bunny lovey.

The main fabric is nani iro double gauze that I bought a long time ago. I ordered it online and I thought the background was white, then when I got it the creaminess of it put me off. I do love the print though and it works perfectly for this.

The toy is basically a napkin with arms and legs. No really. Actually it would be easier to use a napkin because they come pre-hemmed. This type of lovely is not super difficult to make, though there is quite a bit of hand sewing involved. I used Abby’s book Stuffed Animals: from Concept to Construction (affiliate link) to draft the pattern for the bunny head. The rest I just made up as I went along. You can see the legs are just unstuffed bits of fabric. All the knots will be extra gnawable for a teething baby.

I’m not super keen on how the face turned out. Though I am excited I learned how to start embroidering knot-less, thanks to Hillary’s book Wee Wonderfuls (affiliate link). So basically this bunny was born from blogs that became books (say that 5 times fast).

I do like how I messed up on the ears. I sewed them on facing opposite ways and it makes the ears more expressive somehow. Does that make sense? It’s a little weird sewing something with a face. Your stitches really make it come alive, as silly as that sounds.

Now this little bunny is off to a new baby, who will make it come alive with her love–as silly as that sounds, but that’s how the velveteen rabbit did it, right?
