the end of summer

September 6th, 2011

Here are a few bits from our summer I never got around telling you about:

animal parade

waking up to a parade of animals

muffin tin lunch

living on muffin tin lunches

giant bubbles

making giant bubbles

chalk paint

painting with chalk

popsicle stick sculpture

making popsicle stick sculptures with pompoms and mama’s hot glue gun.

monkey cupcakes

eating monkey cupcakes

cycropia

and staying up too late to watch people dance in the trees.

There were of course many trips to the beach and weekend festivals and backyard sprinkler days and huddled by the air conditioner watching movies days. And I think it was a pretty good summer all and all. All three kids were home with me full time and managed not to lose my mind until the last week or so. I tried to have at least one project a day–here is my kid craft board on pinterest that I used a bunch–sometimes just as simple as cutting up some fruit for lunch, but it helped give our days some structure.  I hope your summer was wonderful! Now bring on fall.

Well done for surviving the holidays! I’m into my second year now and what I’ve realised is that, like you, everyone’s happier with a plan for the day and a bit of structure… but not too much ;-)

I love the muffin tin lunch! A fun way to eat a variety of things, raw foods included.
And three kids all summer and you are still (nearly) sane? I have two and they have been driving me nuts the past couple of days. The pinterest board of kids’ activities is fantastic and I think I’ll have to check those tutorials out as both girls will not be going to school until next year.

  3. Looks like you had a fun summer! I didn’t wave mine off to school at the start of the month (too young, alas!), but I’ve instigated a similar idea to your pinterest board – we have a ‘fun stuff file’ and we pick something most mornings that we will do that day. Some days it’s a teeny weeny thing, other days it’s much more involved. It seems to work pretty well for giving us a bit of structure.

We went to see Cycropia at Orton Park, too! It was so magical and beautiful.

I miss summer. It was a great one. And yay for the giant bubbles! Glad they worked for you, too.

I made them because of you! I was looking through the internet trying to find where you talked about it. All your modifications made me just do it already. Now I go out in the backyard and blow bubbles even if my kids aren’t around.

speaking of fall… I was wondering if you plan on hosting a fall kids clothes week again this September ?

  11. yes me too. i always get informed too late to get my supplies (i live in the country & my daily commute schedule doesn’t give me so much freedom to go shop for them) & can’t keep up with the (sewing) train because of this. but i love love the idea of the kid clothes week challenge !!! Fall is the season where you want to be cozy & keep your little ones warm :)

  12. I love the muffin tin lunch thing. Simple but brilliant. We’ve got to try it.

muffin tin lunches are a staple in our household – they are delightfully colourful and never cease to amaze my little one. I adore your blog by the way – it’s obvious that you create it with so much care.
