You told me I had to, so I did: I made a matching tie. I used the pattern and tutorial for the little boy’s tie from the Purl Bee. It came together super quick and in one evening I was done. The tie is almost completely hand sewn. If you set up the ironing board in front of the boob tube, you too can make a tie in a night. “Little boy” is a little vague so I didn’t know if the tie would fit my son (he’s three), but it’s actually perfect.

And it was warm enough that they didn’t have to cover up their cute outfits with a winter coat. I remember there being many snowy easters when I was a kid. They even got to have an easter egg hunt outside. Yay for crazy midwestern weather!

This is the first year that I’ve made my daughter an easter dress. I think it was just too hectic the past few years for me to get one done, much less done on time. But this one was done with a week to spare! Can you believe it? Well the hem is pretty wonky, but I don’t really care because she loves it.

The pattern is from the japanese book Girly Style Wardrobe. The dress is incredibly simple, but in japanese it’s a little harder. I could not for the life of me figure out how they wanted me to cut pattern pieces for the tie, so I just made it up as I went along and they are shorter than I would have liked, but whatever. I did actually make a muslin (because the floral fabric she chose for the dress is vintage and so, so lovely) and I should have learned about the tie with the muslin, but I screwed it up totally on that one and didn’t fix it, even though that ‘s what muslins are for silly (I’m sure it will show up on ye ol blog sometime).

I would like to make my son a tie to match, because how adorable would that be, but easter is two days away and there are eggs to dye!

I was going to make a dress that looked just like this, but then my muddled pregnancy brain got in the way and I cut the fabric on the selvedge instead of the fold. Then after picking out another lovely piece of fabric I did it again. Amazingly I didn’t just go upstairs and eat chocolate, but instead picked out fabric that I had yards and yards of so I could continue to screw up and still get a dress out of it.  And ta da! I cut on the fold (yay!) and used the elastic thread that’s been sitting in my drawer for over a year. I used Erin’s sunny dress tutorial, but stopped after 5 rows of shirring because I liked the baby doll shape of the dress. I never did like the straps that tie (even though I know they are super useful) so I made thicker straps instead. Then high on my one success, I made my son matching shorts. They are a little longer than shorts–board shorts? short pants? long shorts? everyone has a different name for them. I think they are just cute as hell.

oh and thanks for all your comments on the last post. I guess I’ve never read the comments on apartment therapy before. I didn’t know they liked to get down and dirty. I wasn’t hurt at all–everyone’s entitled to their opinions–but I think I may put a disclaimer on my blog about using my photos (to be fair, AT did credit me, they just didn’t get the facts straight) or maybe even have an edited version appear in RSS readers. How do you protect your work?

Sorry to disappear like that, but there hasn’t been much sewing around here lately. Actually none. This dress is the last thing I made (the day before christmas of course).  It’s a simple enough dress, but the gathers were a royal pain in the butt. Velvet isn’t one of the suggested fabrics for a reason. It never gathered enough–the fabric was just too thick–and I had to put the button waaaaay over so it would stay up on her shoulders.  And that is button, not buttons, because I got the flu and five button loops and five covered buttons just seemed like a lot more than I could handle.  But she wore it to christmas dinner and was just the cutest (and that was really the point right).

This is the first dress I’ve made for my daughter, even though I’ve bought yards (and yards) of different pretty prints since she was born (2 and a half years ago!) intending to make many dresses and skirts. I was nervous about using a pattern and nervous about trying to fit a garment on a toddlers, but they are straight little noodles, so really it’s not hard at all.  When Martha from Uniform Studio started making a garment a day for the month of may, I thought if she could whip out 30, then I could probably make one.   So now that May is 2/3rds over it’s done. Granted it took me most of the month to find the pattern, but last weekend at the thrift store there it was and for 10 cents!

I had the idea for a little dress with a big pleat in the front and a strip of patchwork going down the middle and it turned out exactly the way I wanted, thanks mostly to the pattern.  The back and the front are the same in the original, I just combined all the little pleats into one big pleat in the front and kept the back the same.

There is a lot going in these parts over the next month, so things might be quiet here.  I’ll try to pop in once and a while, but I don’t think I’ll have much time for making.  In the meantime, I’ve updated some of my links (especially the clothing section) so you can jump over there for your craft blog fix.
