Your Martha Stewart comment made me laugh out loud - I have to speak with her about a certain sugar cookie recipe that led me astray once...

baking is tops on my list too right now. milo can be calm for just the length of time it takes to make something decadent. it also helps that i can dance like a mad fool in front of him while whisking, which isn't something that can happen in the studio. too bad, because the studio work is totally fat free. sigh.

I agree. I also bake when I'm stressed and I too hate Crisco. People always say 'how do you do it all' it drives me nuts, cause it ain't easy doing even a little.

Tish Boyle's The Good Cookie has an awesome whoopie pie recipe which is even better if you use Dutch-processed cocoa powder instead of natural. And it's shortening-free filling is wowee-zowee :-)

P.S. Don't forget to add a housekeeper to that list of hired help -- we all need an Alice!

I, too, bake when stressed. I bake when happy. I bake at 10 at night just because I suddenly need cake so I'm feeling your vibe.... :-)

And Crisco is gross. I admit, though, I use Tenderflake instead of Crisco and a big spoonful of lard would be super unpleasant. Cream cheese it up!

I'm wondering how these are different from whoopie pies. I haven't made either, and i'm not even sure what a whoopie pie is, but I think I need to eat a giant plate of each to figure out the difference.

hey they look good. but what is crisco? i guess i could just google it and save you the bother of telling me! is it like margarine? ooh, maybe they'd be good sandwiched together with a little mascapone and vanilla essence? yum.

i like the look of what's underneath as well. it sounds like you're doing pretty well to me! hope the wheels don't fall off anytime soon!

The filling I used when I made whoopie pies was something like half butter and half marshmallow fluff.
That was some good cookie, let me tell you. I think my recipe was America's Test Kitchen
