kcwc fall 2012: day six

I woke up to a gray and rainy weekend–the perfect weekend to cozy up in front of the sewing machine! I hope it’s crummy weather where you are too :)

the pattern: Sunki dress by Figgy’s patterns.
the fabric: pinwale corduroy in aqua and leftover purple fabric from these pants.
the sewing: The sewing was challenging. I mean look at the dress! The pockets are definitely the coolest part of the design and they are also the hardest to figure out. Luckily, others have made them and written about it already. Laura from Charm Stitch has a particularly helpful blog post about putting the pockets together (thank you Laura! you saved me!). Once I made the pockets correctly I felt like a sewing genius, so everything else came together without much swearing. The arms are pleated and fussy–and mine aren’t perfect. The zipper was surprisingly simple. You put it in the same way you put in a zipper on a pillow, which seems somehow wrong, but it’s done and functional so you don’t hear me complaining. The dress is a little short, but it still works for scrambles in the woods.

That is a great dress, but those pockets DO look a bit intimidating. Stopped by to get myself back up and sewing I lost a little steam these past few days!

Ohhhlaaala, Meg! I am so happy (and lucky!) to see my name mentioned on your blog twice this week! I love your Sunki dress in the cord and glad that you found my tips for the pocket bag. I’ve been taking a lot of inspiration from the featured projects this week – every day there is something new to add to my favorites list. This challenge is always exciting to follow. I can’t wait for spring!

this is awesome. i’ve heard that about the sunki pockets and am a little intimidated to try it, but it’s good to know there’s a good resource out there (thanks laura!). such a cute dress. is your daughter average height, too? it does seem to come out a little short when i’ve seen it made by others; i would probably add a couple inches.
LOVE this dress! This is the first version of it that I’ve seen sewn up in corduroy – and you have me convinced I need this pattern to do the same! It’s simply stunning!
