kcwc: day one

September 20th, 2010

The kids clothes week challenge is here! Gather up your supplies and your ambious list of things to sew and carve out an hour to work on it today. Then hop over to the flickr group and show us what you’re making. Be sure to check back here because as a special treat I have lined up a giveaway for everyday this week! Lots of them have to do with sewing children’s clothes, but some are just cute and I wish I could win, but I’ll let you have all the fun.

I have to confess did my sewing last week so I could have some things done to show you this week. There are some smarty pants out there who did all their cutting out ahead of time, so the flickr group is already starting to fill up with cute handmade clothes. This little number is the dress version of the Tee for Two pattern from Patterns by Figgy. It’s an amazing pattern for a simple raglan sleeve shirt in knit fabric, done on a plain old sewing machine, with all the seams on the outside and the hems left stylishly (and effortlessly) raw.

This means the shirt will be comfortable, itch free and definitely worn. It also means that you have to sew with WRONG sides together, which is very clearly stated in the directions, but it turns out there is some automatic mechanism in my brain that will not let me sew with wrong sides facing because I had to unpick the same seam three times before I got it right. It’s not like I was tired and not paying attention either: I had coffee in my system, it was mid-morning, quiet even, but my brain kept flipping the fabric behind my back.

If you think you can sew the seams on the outside without your brain short circuting, then you should leave a comment to win this very pattern. That’s right Shelley from Patterns by Figgy has generously donated the Tee for Two pattern for the first giveaway.  The shirt can be long sleeved or short sleeved, or even a dress with a little gathering at the front and flutter sleeves–super customizable and for boys and girls sizes 12mo.-6/7. So leave a comment with some ridicuous sewing desaster you’ve had, or your grand plans for the week, or the weather report, or just say hi. I will use the random number picker thing tomorrow and post an update on this post with the winner.

THE GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!

The winner is #62, Rebecca from The Prepared Family. Congratulations Rebecca!

I used random.org and if I knew how to show you the little picture of the number picker I would, but I promise it said 62.

I spent my hour measuring my two Granddaughters, decided on a oouple of patterns and cutting the pattern pieces out. Looking forward to lots of sewing the next 3 days.

  2. Jen Collier says:

Well, I have to admit it’s 10pm and I haven’t cut anything out, or started anything :( However, I think I might be able to manage a pair of baby legs before I go to bed. Heading to the machine now!

  3. Amy says:

I got a decent start today. I cut out a shirt for my baby boy. I had to stop when I realized that I had sewn the right side to the wrong side of the collar. Then I cut out a dress for my daughter while watching TV. Corduroy is hard to cut, but it will make a super-cute dress.

  4. Rachel says:

  8. Sabra says:

I got a good start today. I have a long way to go to get through my list, however short it may be. It’s going to be a crazy week, but I’m excited to see where I stand at the end of it.

  9. Carolyn says:

I’ve been eyeing that pattern! I really want to try sewing something with knits.

This week I plan to finish some O&S sandbox pants and tackle the “Puuheppa” overalls from Ottobre. I have the pattern traced, but having never sewn from Ottobre, it is a bit daunting!

  10. Tammy says:

I’m excited to report that I got in one hour of sewing today. :) I’m working on a jumper for my daughter.

I’d love the chance to win the pattern! Thanks!

  11. Wendy says:

I love the dress you’ve posted today, very cute. Wish that I could be working on a dress like that but instead, I am a slave to the needs of my children this week and not my wants ; ) I must admit that I now feel like a cheater. I thought that kcwc started yesterday so off and running I went. I have finished 2 pj. pants, 2 wool pants, hemmed and decorated a pair of pj. pants that were ripped so now they have new life as long pj. shorts..I made 2 tutus and a dress up skirt…I am now off to bed so that I will be awake during nap time for sewing tomorrow. Good night all.

  12. Heidi says:

I love that you can use this for both boys and girls.

  13. Cute little dress, just joining in for the first time, however will be making clothes for spring/summer here.

I’ve had too many disasters to write about. But that’s how it goes. I keep chugging along. Today, all I did was wash, preshrink, iron and organize patterns. Tomorrow I will cut and organize. Hard to work around the kiddos but man this is going to be fun!

  15. hi! it’s my lucky day…this is my first visit to your page and it’s a giveaway day! i’m so inspired, yet just learning about the challenge at the end of day one…i’ll hop on it tomorrow! i already had an agenda for the week of what to work on. this will kick me into gear. thanks!

  16. louise says:

I’m sure I’ve had a sewing disaster, but I can’t think what it was… :) So I’ll tell ya my plans for the week. 2 dresses, a pair of jeans for the little and maybe pj’s. Oh and did I mention a bunch of dragon wings for a 2 year birthday party??? This pattern would be great for my pj’s!

  17. Amy says:

My plans for the week: Ikat bag’s Owie Dolls. I’ve got 4 of them I’m making. They are so fun! I didn’t realize KCW was this week! I made 3 dresses for my daughter last week. My poor son is feeling left out!

I have 4 children so my goal is to make at least one thing for each child.
And my husband just got back from NYC and got me some knit fabric so I also want
to learn how to sew with knits on a plain ol’sewing machine.

  20. Sheri says:

Got my hour in today – finally took care of the hunk of fabric that has been hanging out in my sewing room for 3 months waiting to become a skirt for my almost teenager! Gotta love the motivation of sewing week!

  21. Amy says:

adorable dress! I would love to make coats for my 2 little girls (my oldest won’t wear homemade clothes anymore because they are “lame”)! Thanks for the chance to win!!!

  22. *kate says:

I would buy this pattern in a heartbeat … is it truly not available until December 2010 or am I looking at the wrong place? Thanks!

  23. Laura says:

I love Oliver + S patterns. I’ve got a particular interest in the ice cream dress pattern, which I have used 5 times. Definitely got my money’s worth from that one.
