easter dress
April 2nd, 2010

This is the first year that I’ve made my daughter an easter dress. I think it was just too hectic the past few years for me to get one done, much less done on time. But this one was done with a week to spare! Can you believe it? Well the hem is pretty wonky, but I don’t really care because she loves it.
The pattern is from the japanese book Girly Style Wardrobe. The dress is incredibly simple, but in japanese it’s a little harder. I could not for the life of me figure out how they wanted me to cut pattern pieces for the tie, so I just made it up as I went along and they are shorter than I would have liked, but whatever. I did actually make a muslin (because the floral fabric she chose for the dress is vintage and so, so lovely) and I should have learned about the tie with the muslin, but I screwed it up totally on that one and didn’t fix it, even though that ‘s what muslins are for silly (I’m sure it will show up on ye ol blog sometime).
I would like to make my son a tie to match, because how adorable would that be, but easter is two days away and there are eggs to dye!

Oh Meg. You HAVE to make a matching tie. You just have to. How about a bowtie? http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=319956.0
How great would that be?

It’s great! I’d love wearing it, too. The color of the contrast neckband is really fantastic — lets the dress say “spring” without being pastel.

oh my, i can’t believe you made that!! esp from a japanese template! it looks absolutely perfect — that floral fabric is to die for.

What a gorgeous dress! I’m making my daughters’ dresses for the first time too. I thought I picked an easy pattern, but it is a lot more complicated than I thought, and the clock is ticking!!

Oh, it’s lovely! What great colors. I’d love to see that matching tie, but boys don’t really care anyway, right? :) (Mine sure doesn’t!)

Adorable dress! A matching tie for your son would be so, so cute! But I know what it is like to run out of time, and egg dying really is a priority..

What a beautiful dress! I have so many Japanese sewing books and I just stare and dream until the day I figure out how to sew from them.

What a darling dress! If only it came in my size :)

thank you all so much for all your kind words. I was a little hesitant when my daughter picked out the vintage fabric I had been saving for, well saving for the sake of saving really. But then why shouldn’t I cut into it to make her a dress?

I love the floral fabric! It’s so pretty and appropriate for a little girl. I wish it were me sized!

the fabric choice really is perfect–and I love that style with the center pleat starting at the neckline. Has anyone seen a similar pattern in grown-up sizes?

I absolutely love her dress. I saw a dress with a similar shape at Target and I loved they style, but the fabric wasn’t my favorite. I was hoping to find a pattern that was similar. I wish I had that book!

Everything I make is wonky, but I don’t care because I made it! I’m glad you feel that way too, it makes life easier, doesn’t it? This is adorable and the tie? Out of this world.
