the doggie and the kitty

It’s a little late for halloween pictures, but I had to take these after halloween.  The costumes were made in the eleventh hour and there was just no time for pictures, plus it was weirdly hot here so wearing wool wasn’t really that fun.  I used the Purl Bee pattern for the bunny hat and just changed the ears to make a cat and dog.  The kitty tail I just made up as I went along and as I went along I noticed I didn’t have any velcro, so I had to steal some off a bag. I used wool felt for the doggie and mostly fleece for the kitty and though the wool is wonderful and natural the fleece actually worked better.  It was a little harder to sew, but stands up better to kid life.  These hats are great for dress up, but I think next time I would use some elastic instead of the ribbon ties, or nothing (because really they’ll stay on just fine). Otherwise you’ll be tying and untying and freaking out that someone is going to strangle themselves.  This was actually the first time I made my kid’s costumes–I do think halloween should be a homemade holiday, but it can be a royal pain in the butt when your children want to be something different every other day.  Somehow my 3 year old decided what everyone should be and stuck with it for a week (I was to be a fairy and I did make the wings, but wire hangers are a lot harder to bend then you would think and I looked like a smashed fairy).  So even though they hardly wore the costumes on halloween, they are getting plenty of use these days.

sugar city

If you don’t know about the two talented ladies from Sugar City Journal, now you do. They make ridiculously stylish and modern and cute and functional clothes for their kids. And I have been waiting patiently for their patterns to be published. Luckily, I was first in line when they came out and snatched up the pattern for the village frock dress. I’m hoping it will become my little girl’s chirstmas dress. And I was thinking about making it in velvet (or velvette) but the more I think about it the more expensive it sounds. And I’m guess velvet is hard. Any suggestions?

The picture is the packaging (duh). It’s made out of a paper bag and stitched at the sides. On the pattern itself it says, “you are a sewing genius.” Yeah! And here’s the back of the package because it’s as nice as the front.

baby quilt wip

I found this great Alexander Henry print after reading Last Minute Patchwork Gifts (which is fantastic) and falling for the whole cloth quilt that’s in the book. I finally got around to putting the quilt sandwich together at the last craft night (yee haw! red wine and sharp scissors!).  The back turned out pretty good–if I do say so myself.

everything wasn’t so wrinkly when I put it together I swear. It’s been folded up in my bag waiting for me to attempt the hand quilting. Anyone have any advice?  The baby isn’t even born yet (no, mom, I’m not pregnant) so I’m way ahead of schedule. For once. And if the olympics keep sucking me in and making me stay up waaay past bedtime, then it’ll be done it no time.

summer pillow

Sometime you just have to pat yourself on the back for making the damn pillow already.

country living

We are back from a very long and lovely vacation. My days were filled, but nothing really got done, which is just how it should be.  Swim, eat, nap, swim, and watch cable.  Perfect. There are so many beautiful parts of this huge country that I haven’t seen yet.  The midwest is sorely underrated.  Seriously, stop flying over us and come visit for once. I think it’ll be another week before I’m back up to speed. Do you always want to move where you vacation? No matter where it is you go? oh well.  Home is isn’t too bad either.

And why is there a picture of Country Living magazine up there? Because holy crap I’m in it, that’s why. It’s a little sewing tip* passed down to me from a wonderfully crafty lady.  The blurb is pretty small, so I forgive you if you can’t find it (unless you are related to me, then you have to go out and buy it and read the whole thing and tell all your friends too).

have a good week!

*edited to add the tip:

If a pin is a little dull, run it (carefully) through your hair. The tiny bit of oil it picks up will help it glide through your fabric with ease.
